May 2, 2009 - Homework, Chapter 8

Complete the following 4 questions in your work groups and post as a team. *** I realize these questions are extremely difficult - and to that end, Dustin is in the LRC (Stats help) and you are encouraged to work with him for additional help. I am also distributing PowerPoint notes to help.

Complete the following exercises from your textbook
Elementary Statistics—Picturing the World:

1. Section 8.1, Exercise #4, p. 409
2. Section 8.1, Exercise #18, p. 411
3. Section 8.2, Exercise #14, p. 421
4. Section 8.2, Exercise #20, p. 422

    4) a. -10
    b. -38.5
    c. Z is in the rejection region.
    d. Reject Ho. There is enough evidence at the 5% level to reject the claim.

    18) a. -440
    b. -6.3
    c. Z is not in the rejection region.
    d. Fail to reject Ho. There is not enough evidence at the 5% level to reject the claim.

    14) There is no need to run the test because this is a right-tailed test and the test statistic is negative. It is obvious that the standardized test statistic will also be negative and fall outside of the rejeciton region. So, the decision is to fail to reject Ho.

    1. Section 8.1, Exercise #4, p. 409
    Sqrt((30/100)+(15/75)) =0.707106781
    10/0.707106781 =14.142135627

    z = 14.14, which is in the rejection region
    therefore the alternate hypothesis is true

    1. Section 8.1, Exercise #4, p. 409
    Sqrt(((30^2)/100)+((15^2)/75))= 3.464101615
    -10/ 3.464101615 =-2.886751346
    z = -2.886751346, which is not in the rejection region
    therefore the null hypothesis is true

    2. Section 8.1, Exercise #18, p. 411
    -440 52900/40+1322.5
    z=-6.26497193
    answer – no the results don't change.

    3. Section 8.2, Exercise #14, p. 421
    z=-4.032258065
    H0 is true

    4. Section 8.2, Exercise #20, p. 422
    z= .272
    H0 = true
    Ha = false
    therefore the claim is false
